那夜太平校長走了出來,在陸佑堂上跟大家坐而論道,我看了,不見深淵。

太平校長一臉太平,整夜confirms condemning 一切暴力,幾乎擲地有聲。校友梁資深家傑站出來一笑,笑謂1923年的陸佑堂也來了個孫中山,骨便藏在話裡,我們鼓掌鼓掌。喺喎,孫先生雖也叫孫大炮,但他也真的violent,大炮不是打嘴炮,故他從不condemned violence,革命不是請客食飯take away of the leftover吖,隨手擧一例子,話說1905年,國中尚多有識之士戀戀君主立憲,孫先生有點不耐煩,寫了一篇《中國人民主革命之需要》,教唆流血,末段但云:

「且世界立憲,亦必以流血得之,方能稱為真立憲。同一流血,何不為直截了當之共和,而為此不完不備之立憲乎?」

太平校長沒有聽過吧?聽過也會笑而不答⋯⋯

其實,薄扶林大學尚有另一位暴力校友:Dr Nelson Mandela, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa!

曼博士不是太平博士,你我讀過他的回憶錄《Long Walk to Freedom》,大概猜到他老先生當會欣然首肯7月1日那天的”destructive acts”。曼德拉是非洲人國民大會的military wing Umkhonto weSuzwe (意譯「國族之矛」)首任commander-in-chief,書上第45章起首憶述:

“⋯⋯we considered four types of violent activities: sabotage, guerrilla warfare, terrorise and open revolution. “ 跟同志一番 考量後,”it made sense to start with the form of violence that inflicted the least harm against individuals: sabotage.”

甚麼是”sabotage”? 煩請太平校長閒來翻翻OED好了,七月一日那夜許多人仔卻自然懂得。

太平校長既跟師生說了好一夜英語,倘不忙,大可一誦曼德拉1962年在 Pretoria trial 上的一節結案陳辭:

“Always we have been conscious of our obligations as citizens to avoid breaches of the law, where such breaches can be avoided......but nevertheless, we have been driven to speak up for what we believe is right, and to work for it and to try and bring about changes which will satisfy our human conscience.”

曼德拉念茲在茲的是human conscience,斷不是那 positive obligation in obeying the law,難怪先生的結案陳辭起首即說:”I am charged with inciting people to commit an offence by way of protest against the law, the law against which I nor my people hadany say in preparing.” 你倡的律法才是暴力之源,錚錚然,鏗鏗然。

小欄上一篇寫過太平校長那款absolute pacifism 根本站不住腳,少了敏感,少了歷史,少了delicate的人間定格。恕我跟校長先生一般見識高明,I maintain my stand!

太平校長更謂當世是modern times,太平方可盛世,盛世才有種種科技創新與發明,故violence更可怒也。他是scientist,我甚麼也不是,我自然相信他的話中合有真理存焉,可是我分明記得Issac Newton其實生於亂世,既遇上the English civil war,復有1665年的the great plague,正是劍大因瘟疫停課,牛頓暫避鄕間,蘋果便從樹上掉了下來,一切一觸即發。上世紀另一科學巨人愛因斯坦的《廣義相對論》也恰巧寫成於1916,那是the Great War爆發後的第三年,算是不太太平吧。

The invention of science and the scientific revolution in the West 自有其自身的歷史,而這一面的歷史書寫也爭論不已,Thomas Kuhn過後,又早有Post-Kuhn的新人類,殊難定於一說。然而,我們說的既屬是非善惡之爭,創新與科技的利誘或可稍退一步焉?

好一夜,我頗訝於太平校長所持的道理還是頗抽象,violence is condemned,dialogue is preferred to deadlock,the right of expression isn’t absolute,university shall protect its students,my job is to creat a learning environment⋯⋯箇中竟無一語道及當下中國、香港、一國兩制、林門鄭氏、逃犯與反逃犯,只有universal,沒有particular。

“......while we talk grandly of the importance of history, we are insensitive to what people felt and thought who lived through any period of past time......we have too few stories of what people actually experienced.”

這一番話採自去年一部小書《Home is Not Here》,寫的是作者少時的老家故事,紅了櫻桃,綠了芭蕉,作者叫王賡武,我的校長。
